A Romantic Rainy Destination Wedding in Tuscany | Second Shooting with Florin Ștefan
A Magical Destination Wedding in Tuscany
In May 2019, I had the opportunity to be part of a breathtaking destination wedding in Tuscany—and not just as a guest, but as a second shooter alongside the incredibly talented Florin Ștefan.
We reconnected at the Fearless Photographers Conference in Aachen earlier that year. Over coffee and conversations about the upcoming wedding season, he mentioned he’d be shooting a wedding in Italy’s iconic Tuscan countryside. I immediately offered to assist—and just like that, a new adventure began.
Rain in Tuscany, But Spirits Were High
Soon after we arrived in the heart of Tuscany, we were greeted by rolling green hills, endless vineyards… and, unexpectedly, pouring rain. However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned about Tuscany weddings, it’s that the weather rarely dampens the joy of the day.
In fact, the atmosphere was more vibrant than ever. The couple—a Romanian bride and groom living in the Netherlands—had gathered loved ones from across the globe, creating a warm, international energy that made everyone feel at home. Despite the weather, the spirit of celebration was alive and well.
Why I Love Being a Second Photographer (sometimes)
As the day unfolded, I was reminded of why I genuinely love being a second shooter at weddings. Unlike the lead photographer, I get the freedom to explore and capture the day from alternative perspectives.
In other words, second shooting gives you the chance to focus on the candid, the emotional, and the in-between. From quiet glances to spontaneous laughter, these are the moments I live for. What’s more, working with Florin was seamless—he, the couple, and the guests made me feel instantly part of the team.
A Traditional Orthodox Wedding Ceremony Outdoors
Despite the stormy forecast, the couple decided to move forward with their dream of an outdoor Orthodox ceremony—and I’m so glad they did. It was not only a beautiful act of courage but also one of deep meaning.
Watching traditional Orthodox wedding rituals unfold in the open air, against the Tuscan countryside, was something truly unforgettable. These types of ceremonies always remind me of how diverse and rich the world of weddings really is. Each time I witness a new cultural or religious tradition, I walk away with more respect, understanding, and appreciation for love in all its forms.
From Rain to Tuscan Golden Hour
Then, just as the ceremony wrapped up and guests moved toward the cocktail hour, something magical happened: the skies cleared. For a brief but glorious moment, the Tuscan sun broke through the clouds, bathing the venue in golden light.
Without a doubt, this unexpected sunshine added an extra layer of magic to the evening. Guests gathered outside, enjoying the view, the wine, and each other. It was as though nature had given us a gift—and we fully embraced it.
Why Get Married in Tuscany?
By the end of the day, it was clear why so many couples dream of a destination wedding in Tuscany. Here, you get:
✔️ Rolling hills and vineyards
✔️ Historic villas and medieval castles
✔️ World-class food and local wines
✔️ Picture-perfect backdrops for your ceremony
✔️ A relaxed, romantic energy your guests will always remember
In short, it’s the perfect setting for a wedding that feels both timeless and deeply personal.
Final Thoughts from a Tuscany Wedding Photographer
Looking back, this experience was one of the highlights of my year. It reminded me, once again, why I love wedding photography—especially when it takes me to places as magical as Tuscany.
Ultimately, photography is about storytelling. Whether you’re the main photographer or the second shooter, you get to witness people at their most joyful, their most authentic. And for that, I am endlessly grateful.
