Anaïs & Ramon – Mas Marroch

Anaïs & Ramon – Mas Marroch

This beautiful couple picked some really beautiful spaces to celebrate their wedding. The ceremony was held in a pretty old church in Llagostera. Afterwards, everyone moved to Mas Marroch in Girona. This elegant venue is one of those places where every corner hides a pleasant surprise. The cocktail reception was held in an astonishing wooden-roof pergola. In the evening, an open-air candle light dinner was served in the secluded old garden by the main vila. A treat was not just nice on the eye, famous Michelin Star Chefs – the Roca brothers managed to please those with the most discerning palate.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Gill and Chris brought their friends and families all the way from Scotland to celebrate their wedding day under the blue skies of Spain. And they hit the bull´s-eye! Everyone was amazed with the venue Casa Felix, the food and with how stunning the bride looked. It was one of those weddings where everything goes as planned and exceeds expectations. On top of that, it was Sant Joan, the longest day of the year and a magical night of celebration here in Catalunya! If that was not enough, it coincided with Chris’s birthday! Que vivan los novios! Lang may yer lum reek!

Hey! Let´s go to Sitges!

Hey! Let´s go to Sitges!

A destination wedding is what turns a one-day celebration into a unique adventure. It is like a big scale family trip with a twist! Sabrina and Frank could not have picked better. The wedding was held in a church by the sea in Sitges and the rest of the celebration took place in Casa Felix, a magnificent villa lost in the vineyards of Garraf. There was even some time for a quick drink a in a chiringuito by Sitges beach.

So, hey, let´s all go to Sitges! And let this wicket theme from the 80s take us there again and again! Give it a go!

Engagement Session in Barcelona

Engagement Session in Barcelona

You never get bored of this city. Barcelona is both, visually attractive and extremely photogenic. It is a city with personality. To a photographer, it offers a multitude of backgrounds, textures, and an unusual light that changes completely throughout the day. It is modern and traditional, busy and intimate. It reveals an eclectic mixture of old, historic monuments, vibrant day life, multicultural habitants, and the most impressive Art Nouveau architecture (here called Modernisme). Moreover, you can easily change your perspective and admire the city from above by climbing one of many viewpoints (here called Miradores). Barcelona is surrounded by mountains: Montjüic and Tibidabo and some neighbourhoods were build on hills: El Carmel, Horta, Guinardo. If that was not enough, there is plenty of green in Gaudi´s Parque Güell and plenty of salty water at Barceloneta´s beach.

With this unlimited variety of locations, photographing couples in Barcelona is never the same, even if I get to return to the same places. For me, each session is a completely different experience, because every couple has its own energy and style and they interact differently with the surrounding. My idea is to capture those differences and to reflect the essence of each couple in the photographs.

I met with Fu and Chen early in the morning, to photograph them in the old Gothic quarter, before the city fully woke up. Most popular areas tend to get crowded after breakfast, but we got lucky and had some parts of it to ourselves. Beforehand, we planned together a very intense schedule for the day. We decided to photograph in 4 different locations, but also wanted to change outfits and the stylisticks. Parque Güell was our second location, and Chen wore her wedding dress for this occasion. To complement the day, we wondered around the busy streets of Born. The strong afternoon sun and the red dress set perfectly against the old walls of the city. At the end, we moved down to the beach, to end our session bare feet on the sand.

Behind the scenes stories

Behind the scenes stories

It was one of those weddings, which takes a slide towards the wild side before it even starts. I loved it from the very beginning. Everywhere I looked, there was something I wanted to photograph, so many little stories within the big picture.

Ruben and Montse, the happy couple, are parents of two girls: Mariona (a natural born model) and Blanca (an unusually independent 2 year old, who wondered around and socialised with everybody requiring no supervision whatsoever). There were about 20 kids at this wedding. Beautiful chaos!

The ceremony was held in a tiny stone church and wedding guests took over its every available surface. The couple was sated in front of the priest. It was steaming hot, dark and I could hardly move.

I had to quickly adapt a strategy here, because it was obvious that moving around to try out different angles and perspective was out of question.

I found a spot with good visibility and brought three large aperture lenses to be able to change the focal range without having to move much. Then, I put all my money on Montse and Rubens reactions. I already knew, they were very spontaneous, emotional and expressive. I did not have to wait long for the children to get bored and move towards the altar. They were looking for attention and entertainment, and luckily for me, had no shame.

In this particular photo, Mariona is trying to attract her parents’ looks and her cousin is trying to get her attention. Naughty but cute!

Interview from Wedding Photography Select

Andreu Doz Photography a wedding photographer based in Spain shares his work with us today in our wedding photography spotlight feature. Andreu received his first camera in high school and realised photography was going to be a big part of his life, so he took himself to London and studied photography at the Goldsmith University. Andreu loves shooting weddings and has shot over one hundred and sixty wedding to date.

Do you have a recent favorite photo that you have taken? Tell us how you took it and why you like it?

Apart from photographing all the big moments, I really like to look, where no one else is looking and see things no one else is paying attention to. For me, those moments are equally important. I took this photo at my last wedding. It was a rainy day and the ceremony was moved under a roof of an old stable. It was packed and this little boy climbed up the window to watch the events from a different perspective. When I saw it I decided to give him his very own spot in this wedding story.

What really gets you emotional when you’re shooting a wedding?

I am an observer, in life and at work – I prefer to stay in the shadows. This is why I do not like to stage my photographs. It makes me uncomfortable to tell people what to do, and I think it makes them uncomfortable too. This is why I always wait for them to show their real emotions. This is what attracts me most in photographing weddings. All those opportunities to witness and capture true joy, affection, kindness, passion, and unity. Preserving an emotion in a photo, it really gets me.

How do you put a couple at ease before and during their big day?

I believe that the key here is to get to know them, and to let them know me. I make an effort to establish a connection with all my couples before the wedding. We meet several times. If they are up for it, I photograph them before the wedding day, in relaxed and casual circumstances. It really helps if they know what to expect. This way they can be themselves in my presence. If it is impossible to meet, due to long distance between us, we Skype and I explain how the wedding day looks from my perspective. I also try to learn as much as possible about them to be able to tell their story honestly.

What is it about being a wedding photographer you love?

I love being on the move. I have always preferred to learn from experience, and this job gives me so many opportunities to travel the world, to meet real people, to see how they live and to share their happiness. Each wedding season is a crazy, busy time for me. It feels like getting on a rollercoaster, and a different one each year.

What is it about being a wedding photographer that you don’t love so much?

Hmm….this is the toughest question you ask. I keep coming back to it and I do not know what to answer.

What photography kit do you have in your bag & what is your favourite?

Canon Body 5Ds, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 II, Canon 24-70mm II f/2.8, Canon 70-200mm II f/2.8, Canon 35mm f/1.4, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Canon 85mm f/1.8, Canon 20mm f/2.8, Canon Fisheye 15mm f/2.8, Canon 135mm f/2.

I love all my lenses, but I have a special relationship with my Canon 70-200mm II f/2.8.

What is your favourite part of the day?

I really like to photograph people arriving to the ceremony. This moment is full of electricity and anticipation. I also love the moment when the ceremony ends and everyone gathers to greet the couple, hug them, laugh together, share their joy and show their love. This is when all the stress and tension give room to pure happiness.

What tips would you give a couple on choosing a wedding photographer?

Two things: mutual understanding and connection. Make sure you pick the style you like, research well, ask all the questions you need, and let the photographer know your expectations. Make sure you actually like the wedding photographer as a person. He or she will be with you in a very private and often stressful situation, so it is essential that you feel good in her or his presence.

Why do you think couples choose you?

I have noticed that all couples that choose me have one thing in common, they all say they search for an honest and natural documentation of their wedding. I think this is exactly what they see in my pictures and this is the kind of photography I have to give.

How do you relax when you’re not shooting weddings?

Most of the year I am on the move, my work and my private life blend together and they hardly ever separate. When I stop, I like to hang in a hammock in my garden and spend time with my four cats and a dog.

What are you looking forward to and why?

To be honest, I just want to keep doing what I do – photographing weddings all over the globe.
